The Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) is the community's arts education center, cultural exhibit, gallery space and theater - all wrapped into one.
We invite artists, creatives, designers, craftspeople, families and kids of all ages to visit our historic building and enjoy classes, events, shows, gallery viewings and more. There's something for everyone at our vibrant arts center.
Established in 1978, the MAC is located in the beautifully restored historic post office building. As a vibrant, community-driven arts center, the MAC is home to the visual, performing and literary arts.
The MAC is committed to providing affordable access to diverse art forms through education, immersion and outreach.
The arts center hosts two galleries, the Benedum and Davis galleries, and the historic Tanner Theatre.
The Benedum Gallery, made possible through funding from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, was established in 1979. Located on the first floor of the MAC, the gallery displays monthly art exhibits from a variety of cultural and artistic backgrounds. The gallery is handicap-accessible and open during weekdays and Saturday afternoons.
The Robert M. Davis Gallery is MAC's second-floor gallery. This gallery was created out of a grass roots effort in 2004 as means to showcase emerging artists and cutting edge art forms. In 2007 and 2008 the Davis Gallery experiences several significant upgrades and was doubled in size due to a grant from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust and community volunteer efforts. The Robert M. Davis Gallery uses a gallery track hanging system and covers over 800 square feet (74 m2) of the second level.
The Mabel DeVries Tanner Theatre was dedicated in 1981, and the room serves as MAC's space for the performing arts. Over the years, the theatre has hosted everything from plays and classic theatre productions to avant-noise music performances. The theatre also functions as a multipurpose space, available to the public for reservations for events such as wedding receptions and other private parties. In 2008, the MAC began regularly booking local and touring bands for shows and concerts in the space.
As a non-profit located in the historic post office building, the MAC offers a diverse array of programming in the community for decades. The MAC is committed to providing affordable access to diverse art forms through education, immersion and outreach.
Under new leadership, the MAC is looking to the future, revamping programming and outreach initiatives while undergoing major renovations to revitalize the heart and soul of our community arts center.
Those interested in helping us open our doors full-time and increase programming can donate funds directly, sign up for upcoming classes (including social dance workshops, painting, summer camps and more), volunteer or offer other in-kind donations like art supplies.
Donations can be made online at monartscenter.com, dropped off during programming at 107 High Street or mailed to P.O Box 293, Morgantown WV 26505.
With the love, help and support of our community, the MAC is returning better than ever - offering the space and opportunities to enjoy and embrace the arts.
